What happened in Brazil and how does it impact democracies around the world?

What happened in Brazil on 8th January 2023?

Firstly, lets talk about Brazil. Brazil is the largest South American country and in Latin America. It is the fifth-largest country and the
seventh-most populous country in the world. Its the world's fourth largest democracy. Its is also a part of major global forums like the G20 , BRICS and other major organizations. So on 2nd October 2022 the current president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro who is a right-wing, socially conservative nationalist is going to fight elections against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is the most popular leader in Brazilian history and served two terms as president between 2003 and 2010. He was later arrested under corruption charges as part of a sweeping national investigation.

The results of the first round came and none of the candidates got a majority of 50% so a second round was conducted in which da silva 50.9% of the total votes and Jair Bolsonaro got 49.1%. So after the final results the party of Jair Bolsonaro claimed that the elections were fraud and didn't accept his defeat. After that people started protesting and demand that military should be called and the swearing in ceremony of the new president but the winning party claimed that their demands are unreasonable. Then on 8th January the protestors who are the supporters of Jair Bolsonaro turned violent ,

they break down police barriers, burned cars, vandalized buildings and even attacked the countries most powerful buildings including the congressional building, supreme court and the Planalto presidential palace. After that more than 1500 people were detained and on 9th Jan the president declared emergency.

How does the affect the democracies around the world?

This incident damages the image of democracies around the world as a very important pillar in democracy is the transition of power that takes place. That the person who has lost must admit his defeat and let winner of the elections take control. This reminds us of the incident that happened on 6th January 2021 when the

supporters of Donald J Trump stormed the US Capitol in that case also Donald Trump didn't admit his defeat and claimed that the elections were fraud. This incident was a black day in the history of the United States of America as the it made a mockery of democracy around the world.

US-India Jet Engine Deal: A Boost for Both Countries

US-India Jet Engine Agreement: A Boost for Both Countries The United States and India are close to finalizing an agreement to jointly manufacture fighter jet engines in India. The deal, which would involve General Electric (GE) partnering with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is seen as a significant step forward in India’s efforts to develop a domestic defence industrial base. Currently, India relies on imports for most of its fighter jet engines. The deal would allow India to produce advanced jet engines, which would give it greater self-reliance in the defence sector. It would also strengthen India’s strategic partnership with the US. The deal is still in the early stages of negotiations, but if it is successful, it would be a major boost for both countries. For the US, the deal would help to secure a long-term customer for its advanced jet engine technology. For India, the deal would help to meet its growing demand for fighter jets and would give it a more sec...
