What happened in Brazil and how does it impact democracies around the world?

What happened in Brazil on 8th January 2023?

Firstly, lets talk about Brazil. Brazil is the largest South American country and in Latin America. It is the fifth-largest country and the
seventh-most populous country in the world. Its the world's fourth largest democracy. Its is also a part of major global forums like the G20 , BRICS and other major organizations. So on 2nd October 2022 the current president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro who is a right-wing, socially conservative nationalist is going to fight elections against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is the most popular leader in Brazilian history and served two terms as president between 2003 and 2010. He was later arrested under corruption charges as part of a sweeping national investigation.

The results of the first round came and none of the candidates got a majority of 50% so a second round was conducted in which da silva 50.9% of the total votes and Jair Bolsonaro got 49.1%. So after the final results the party of Jair Bolsonaro claimed that the elections were fraud and didn't accept his defeat. After that people started protesting and demand that military should be called and the swearing in ceremony of the new president but the winning party claimed that their demands are unreasonable. Then on 8th January the protestors who are the supporters of Jair Bolsonaro turned violent ,

they break down police barriers, burned cars, vandalized buildings and even attacked the countries most powerful buildings including the congressional building, supreme court and the Planalto presidential palace. After that more than 1500 people were detained and on 9th Jan the president declared emergency.

How does the affect the democracies around the world?

This incident damages the image of democracies around the world as a very important pillar in democracy is the transition of power that takes place. That the person who has lost must admit his defeat and let winner of the elections take control. This reminds us of the incident that happened on 6th January 2021 when the

supporters of Donald J Trump stormed the US Capitol in that case also Donald Trump didn't admit his defeat and claimed that the elections were fraud. This incident was a black day in the history of the United States of America as the it made a mockery of democracy around the world.

Why did Honduras break its relations with Taiwan.

On Sunday Honduras break its 82 year old relations with Taiwan. The relations of both the nations goes back to 1941 when Republic of China's government, which remains Taiwan's official name, was still in  China before it fled to the island in 1949 after losing the civil war with Mao Zedong communists.  What is the reason behind this? Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told a news conference Sunday that Taiwan had ended its relations with Honduras to "safeguard its sovereignty and dignity". Wu said that Honduras President Xiomara  Castro and her team always had a "fantasy" about China and had raised the issue of switching ties before the presidential election in Honduras in 2021. Relations between Taiwan and Honduras were once stable, he said, but China had not stopped luring Honduras. "The foreign minister and embassy grasped the relevant information and handled it carefully. However, the Castro government also asked us for billions of dollars in huge ...
